New York Marathon! The Yankees unleashed a nine-run assault in an epic half-inning lasting 41 minutes.

During today’s matchup at Yankee Stadium, the New York Yankees beat the Washington Nationals 11-2, highlighted by Aaron Judge’s two-run homer in the top of the third that energized the home fans. They had no idea the excitement was only starting.

The Yankees sent 15 hitters to the plate that inning, racking up 8 hits, 3 walks, and taking advantage of an unusual catcher interference call to score 9 runs. That inning lasted a full 41 minutes.

“It was incredible,” said manager Aaron Boone. “That was one serious rally.”

Cade Cavalli started the inning by giving up a single to Ben Rice, then back-to-back homers were hit by Judge and Cody Bellinger. And these were not your typical “Yankee Stadium homers.”

Judge’s 41st home run of the season flew at 107.2 mph, traveling 424 feet over the left-center field wall, putting the Yankees ahead 3-0. Bellinger followed with a 102.9 mph blast that went 410 feet to right-center field, marking his 25th home run of the year.

“It felt like everyone was in sync, everyone had solid at-bats without trying to do too much,” Judge said. “Players were producing quality swings one after another. Bellinger hit that big homer right after me, everyone was trying to keep the momentum going.”

Jasson Domínguez helped the Yankees score as Jazz Chisholm walked and stole second base, then scored on Domínguez’s ground ball double. Anthony Volpe hit a fly out, but Austin Wells reached base on catcher interference. The Yankees successfully challenged the call, setting the stage for Ryan McMahon’s three-run homer, his second since joining the Yankees last month.

McMahon’s home run forced Cade Cavalli out after 2.1 innings and 8 runs allowed (7 earned), bringing lefty Shinnosuke Ogasawara out of the bullpen.

Ogasawara struck out Trent Grisham, but Ben Rice hit another home run in his second at-bat of the inning, extending the lead to 9-0. This marked the Yankees’ third time this season hitting four home runs in a single inning, making them the first team in MLB history to achieve this feat. Before this, Yankees hitters had only managed four or more homers in an inning during four separate innings across 47 seasons.

“It’s kind of crazy,” McMahon said. “But looking at the depth of our lineup, I think this is the kind of inning our team can produce. Hopefully, we’ll see more moments like this in the future.”

Judge singled, passing the baton to Bellinger and Chisholm, who each drew walks to load the bases. Domínguez then hit a weak grounder down the third base line, allowing Judge to score and giving the Yankees a 10-run lead.

As the lineup continued to surge and build a huge lead, Max Fried—who had retired the first 11 Nationals batters—used the lengthy inning to head to the indoor batting cage for some pitching practice.

“That’s a good question, right?” Fried said, who pitched seven innings and allowed only one run, improving to 14-5. “The score went from 1-0 to 10-0; of course, worse things can happen.”

Volpe struck out to end the inning—his second out in that frame—bringing the rally to a close. In total, two Nationals pitchers threw 77 pitches combined in the inning, the second-highest pitch count in a single inning since 2000. Only the 2003 Marlins threw more, tossing 91 pitches in the first inning against the Red Sox on June 27, 2003.

“I know we scored a lot that inning, but you could tell from every batter at the plate, every player on deck, even a glance into the dugout, that everyone was locked in,” Judge said. “That really helped us not focus on how many runs we scored or what was happening. It felt like, ‘Hey, you’ve got a job to do. No matter how many outs there are, who’s on base, or the score, you have to step up and do your job.’ That’s what makes this team special.”

In this victory, six different Yankees players hit home runs, including Grisham’s leadoff homer in the first inning and Wells’ homer in the fourth.

“At this time of year, you want as many players as possible to feel good about their approach at the plate, and I think we have a lot of those guys,” Boone said. “We still need to get some others going, but I feel like a lot of people are in a good spot.”

After losing three straight to the Red Sox, the Yankees finished their home series with four consecutive wins, bringing their record to 11 victories in the last 15 games. They scored a total of 26 runs and hit 10 home runs in the three-game sweep against the Nationals.

“It’s great to see the guys step up today on the final day game, with a chance to put together a really good series and finish it off on a high note,” Boone said. “It’s been a great day for us. The flight went smoothly. Now we’ve got to go to Chicago and perform well.”
