Shohei Ohtani's sacrifice fly turned into a double play; Hernández discusses the hidden baserunning mistake.

The Los Angeles Dodgers lost again today to the Arizona Diamondbacks. During the game, there was a brief incident where Enrique Hernández made an unnoticed baserunning error, causing the team to miss an early scoring opportunity. In a post-game interview, he said he didn’t see teammate Mookie Betts’ signal to slide.

The event took place in the bottom of the 5th inning, with the Dodgers first advancing runners to second and third base thanks to hits by Hernández and Miguel Rojas. Shohei Ohtani then came to bat and hit the ball toward left field, but Lourdes Gurriel Jr. caught it. Seeing this, Hernández at third base decided to dash home, but because he didn’t slide, he was tagged out on the return throw. What should have been a sacrifice fly ended up as a double play.

The Dodgers recorded six hits in total today, but only managed to score one run in the bottom of the 7th inning, driven by Betts’ hit. On the mound, Tyler Glasnow experienced bleeding on his finger during the 2nd inning, yet he kept the Diamondbacks hitless through five innings until they finally broke through in the top of the 7th. He pitched seven innings, allowing three runs and striking out six, performing well despite the team’s eventual 1-6 loss.

In his post-game interview, Hernández reflected on the baserunning play: “The ball was hit to left field, a situation where I had to be ready for a tag play… Betts called for me to slide, but I didn’t see him and didn’t slide, so I was called out. I thought I was safe at the time.” He also mentioned that if they had scored then, the outcome of the game might have been different.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts expressed dissatisfaction with today’s game. He said, “We had several good scoring chances early on but failed to capitalize, which allowed the momentum to shift to the other side. I won’t go into many details tonight, but there were many distractions that caused a lack of focus, which is not typical of us.”
