Juan Soto, who was signed by the New York Mets with a 15-year, $765 million contract before the season, had a slow start but today against the Miami Marlins, he launched two home runs and successfully stole two bases. With 35 homers and 25 steals this season, he is very likely to achieve his first career 30-30.

Soto’s two home runs came in the 4th and 6th innings, sparking a rally for the Mets, though they ultimately lost 8-11 to the Marlins. In 136 games this season, he leads the team with 35 home runs and 102 runs scored, and his 25 stolen bases tie him for first on the team.

Mets’ starting left-hander David Peterson gave up a career-worst 8 earned runs in just two innings, but reliever Chris Devenski held the line with three scoreless innings in long relief, giving the Mets a chance to mount a comeback.

In the bottom of the 3rd, Soto drew a walk and stole second base, then scored after Mark Vientos hit a three-run homer; in the 4th, Soto hit a solo home run himself; in the 6th, he hit a two-run homer to tie the game. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Soto is truly a special player and hitter who is now in peak form. “Look at the stats; it’s really impressive.” Although Soto’s on-base percentage is a career low this season, and his batting average and slugging percentage are his second lowest, other metrics remain at or above his career standards.

After the game, Soto said he felt good, but winning is what matters most. Regardless of his personal performance, he always wants the team to win, so losing is always a bit disappointing.
