On August 31 local time, the San Francisco Giants of MLB announced that left-handed rookie Carson Whisenhunt was placed on the 15-day injured list because of a back injury, prompting the team to urgently summon right-handed pitcher Deng Kaiwei from Triple-A. The Giants also confirmed that Deng Kaiwei will start as the pitcher on September 1 (4:10 AM Beijing time on September 2) in an away game against the Colorado Rockies, marking his third promotion to the major leagues in his career.
During his second call-up to the majors this season, Deng Kaiwei appeared in four games in August, starting three of them, pitching a total of 13.1 innings with a record of 1 win and 3 losses and an ERA of 8.78. He earned his first career win with five scoreless innings against the Washington Nationals on the 9th. However, on the 22nd, after struggling in a game against the San Diego Padres and facing difficulties in the fourth inning, he was pulled from the game with 3.1 innings pitched and 3 runs allowed (2 earned), taking the loss and was subsequently sent back to Triple-A, ending his 20-day stint in the majors.
According to MLB rules, players sent down to the minors must wait 15 days before returning to the majors unless they replace an injured player. Since Whisenhunt was placed on the injured list due to a back strain, creating a vacancy in the Giants’ starting rotation, Deng Kaiwei was able to return to the majors early and get his second chance on the mound this year.
Deng Kaiwei first reached the majors last March, initially appearing as a long reliever. This year, the team views him as a potential starting pitcher and is gradually building his experience. This will be his fourth start this season, where he aims not only for his second win but also to prove himself again and earn the coaching staff’s trust. His opponent will be the 23-year-old pitcher Chase Dollander.
The Rockies, ranked last in the major leagues, have been quite unstable recently, ending a four-game losing streak only after defeating the Cubs on September 1. However, Deng Kaiwei must still be wary of hitters like Brenton Doyle and Tyler Freeman, who can inflict serious damage with a single swing at any time.
