The San Francisco Giants urgently recalled Deng Kaiwei from Triple-A, and he promptly earned a win at the Rockies' Coors Field, achieving his second win this season. Giants' manager Bob Melvin commented, "He performed excellently. Given our typical bullpen usage, getting him through six innings is beneficial. Of course, he gave up two runs, but listen, he didn’t issue any walks, struck out eight batters, and both his breaking balls and fastballs were outstanding. You could see his confidence grow throughout the game, and he was very determined to pitch into the sixth inning."
Clearly, Melvin was very pleased with securing the win using only two bullpen pitchers. Deng Kaiwei’s excellent pitching allowed the relievers valuable rest. He threw a four-seam fastball, curveball, slider, and sinker, causing Rockies hitters to swing and miss 17 times. Despite the Rockies being at the bottom of the standings, pitching at Coors Field—known as a "batter's paradise"—is still a tough challenge for a rookie pitcher.
The good news is that Deng Kaiwei is expected to continue pitching; according to the rotation, he will face the St. Louis Cardinals on September 8. He was called up to replace the injured rookie left-hander Carson Whisenhunt. By rule, pitchers must spend at least 15 days on the injured list (10 days for position players), and with only 25 games left in the regular season, Whisenhunt might not return this year.
