The New York Mets are currently considering asking Koda Glover to accept a minor league assignment.

While the Mets work to piece together their optimal starting rotation for the season’s final stretch, they have not decided when Glover will next start at the major league level.

According to The Athletic, the Mets are considering asking Glover to accept a minor league assignment with an option. Per his contract, the right-handed pitcher must consent to this decision. Mike Puma of the New York Post reported today that the Mets will know by Saturday whether Glover is willing to accept the demotion.

Manager Carlos Mendoza did not explicitly confirm whether the Mets have presented the minor league option to Glover but noted, "Everything is still under discussion... We all understand that if it comes to that, he will have to give us his approval."

This marks the latest development in a disappointing stretch for Glover. As a 2023 All-Star, he pitched at an ace level during his first 13 starts this season, posting a 1.47 ERA. However, after straining a hamstring while covering first base in mid-June, his performance has significantly declined.

Since returning from the injured list on July 11, Glover has posted a 5.90 ERA over nine starts and has not completed six innings in any outing. In his most recent start on Monday, he gave up five runs in 4.2 innings. The Mets have lost four of his last five starts.

The Mets are currently using a six-man starting rotation, and theoretically, Glover’s next start would be next Monday—the final game of a crucial three-game series against the Reds, one of the few teams capable of catching the Mets for a wild card spot. As of today’s games, the Mets hold a five-game lead over the Reds in the standings.

Glover’s struggles are only part of the Mets’ starting rotation woes. Last year’s ace left-hander Sean Manaea missed the first half of the season due to an oblique injury and has posted a 5.60 ERA since his return. All-Star David Peterson has an ERA of 7.56 over his last five starts.

However, two top pitching prospects—Nolan McLean and Jonah Tong—have provided much-needed support. McLean is 4-0 with a 1.37 ERA over his first four major league starts, including another impressive performance on Wednesday. Together, they have altered the short-term outlook of the pitching staff—potentially giving the Mets more flexibility regarding Glover’s situation.

After playing for 16 consecutive days, the Mets will have a day off tomorrow, allowing them to reset their starting rotation in whatever way they see fit.

“I’m doing everything I can to get back to my previous form,” Glover said through translator Hiroshi Fujiwara on Monday. “It’s simple: if I can do it, we’ll make the playoffs, and I can pitch there. If I can’t, then I won’t have a spot to pitch.”
