In the top of the eighth inning today, Yankees reliever Devin Williams gave up a double and walked three batters, with the last walk scoring the go-ahead run, leading to the Yankees’ 7-8 defeat against the Houston Astros.
Prior to this game, the Yankees had won eight consecutive games at Yankee Stadium, but after this loss, they fell behind the Blue Jays by 3.5 games in the American League East standings.
Carlos Correa hit a double off Williams, who then walked Jesús Sánchez, struck out Yainer Diaz, walked Christian Walker, and struck out Ramón Urías, setting the stage for Taylor Trammell. After five pitches, Trammell drew a walk to score a run, breaking the 4-4 tie. Jeremy Peña then hit an RBI single off Camilo Doval, who also gave up two more runs due to a pitching violation and a wild pitch.
Manager Aaron Boone and Williams were both ejected for disputing ball and strike calls in the eighth inning, after which Doval came in to replace Williams on the mound.
Austin Wells hit a two-run home run for the Yankees, marking his 20th homer of the season, along with two doubles. Giancarlo Stanton also hit his 18th home run of the year.
Every run counted as Cody Bellinger launched a three-run homer off Bryan Abreu in the ninth inning, but the game ended when Jazz Chisholm Jr. struck out on a full count.
