Major League Baseball (MLB) announced today that San Francisco Giants third baseman Matt Chapman has been suspended for one game and fined an undisclosed amount after physical contact with Colorado Rockies pitcher Kyle Freeland during a game. However, Chapman has appealed the decision, and the suspension is currently on hold.
The incident took place in the first inning of the Giants' 7-4 away victory over the Rockies. After Giants slugger Rafael Devers hit a two-run homer, he exchanged words with Freeland, which escalated into a bench-clearing brawl, creating a tense atmosphere on the field. Following the altercation, Freeland, Devers, Giants infielders Willy Adames and Chapman were all ejected. Besides Chapman’s suspension and fine, Freeland, Adames, and Devers were also fined by the league.
Giants manager Bob Melvin commented after the game, “Honestly, we don’t believe we instigated this. But it’s part of the game, and we’ll deal with it once the appeal outcome is decided.”
Rockies interim manager Warren Schaeffer publicly supported Freeland's actions, feeling the opponent’s celebration was disrespectful. “Devers watched his home run longer than Kyle could tolerate, and Kyle felt offended. I fully back him,” Schaeffer said. “Some advocate letting young players express themselves, but when a competitive pitcher feels disrespected at home, that’s a different matter.”
Despite being ejected due to the conflict, Chapman had an impressive game. In the second inning, he hit a solo home run off German Marquez to give the Giants an early lead. In the sixth inning, he added a three-run homer, extending the score to 9-5.
Due to his early exit, Freeland is confirmed to start again for the Rockies in Saturday’s series against the San Diego Padres.
