The MRI scan for Royals' Bobby Witt Jr. revealed no serious issues, only a back spasm.

After exiting early yesterday because of a lower back spasm, Bobby Witt Jr. did not appear in the Kansas City Royals' starting roster today during their 11-2 home win over the Minnesota Twins. The Royals' shortstop had an MRI to gain a clearer understanding of the extent and seriousness of his condition.

Manager Matt Quatraro mentioned that Witt’s back remained stiff today, showing some improvement compared to yesterday but not significantly.

Following the game, Quatraro said the MRI results showed no condition worse than a spasm, which was exactly what the Royals hoped for. Now, they just need to wait for the spasm to subside so Witt can move more freely.

“We believe it’s just a back spasm,” Quatraro said postgame. “The MRI didn’t reveal anything bad, so we feel good about it. We just need to wait for the symptoms to fade.”

When asked if he was concerned Witt might need to be placed on the injured list before today’s game, Quatraro said the team had to wait for the MRI results. Witt is also scheduled to see the Royals’ spine specialist.

The Royals will monitor how Witt feels tomorrow to decide their next steps. Witt briefly appeared in the bullpen today to congratulate rookie Carter Jensen on recording his first career hit during the team’s offensive outburst against the Twins.

However, after a foul ball flew toward Witt, he returned to the training room.

According to a team trainer, Witt felt tightness in his back while fielding in the top of the sixth inning yesterday. He made two groundouts, one requiring a wide-range run and a backhand catch. When the team returned to the dugout to prepare for the bottom of the sixth, his back tightness persisted, preventing him from playing in the seventh inning.

The spasm did not ease yesterday or today, prompting further examination.

Witt has played in 139 of the Royals’ 142 games this season. He missed a game in early August due to back tightness while in Minnesota. Witt was absent for the August 10 series finale but returned to the starting lineup on August 11. Quatraro believes this injury is unrelated to the previous one.

“Not to my knowledge,” Quatraro said. “I mean, we’ve been in a good place. Again, this is the kind of thing anyone who’s had back spasms knows — it just comes on out of nowhere, which is exactly what we think this is.”

At 25 years old, Witt is hitting .294/.352/.503 this season with 21 home runs, 77 RBIs, and 34 stolen bases.
