The Arizona Diamondbacks have today bolstered their bullpen by signing free-agent right-hander Taylor Clarke to a one-year contract worth $1.5 million, with incentives that could raise the total to just over $2 million.
Now 32 years old, Clarke was originally selected by the Diamondbacks in the third round of the 2015 draft and appeared in 78 games (including 20 starts) for the team between 2019 and 2021. In November 2021, the Diamondbacks chose not to renew his contract.
Afterwards, Clarke signed with the Kansas City Royals and spent three seasons there, making 156 appearances (including 2 starts). Last season, he pitched in 51 games with a 1-1 record, a 3.25 ERA, and held opponents to a .194 batting average. He was one of only two pitchers in the majors last year with at least 50 appearances and fewer than 9 walks allowed. The Diamondbacks expect him to provide valuable innings for their bullpen.
“We clearly understand his qualities and have a long history working with him, so this signing is a great addition to the team,” said Diamondbacks General Manager Mike Hazen.
Strengthening the bullpen has been one of the Diamondbacks' offseason priorities. So far, the team has added Jonathan Loáisiga and Clarke. Hazen noted that there is still work to be done before catchers and pitchers begin their first training session on February 10.
Hazen admitted that before relievers Justin Martinez and A.J. Puk return from Tommy John surgery recovery, the bullpen might lack experience early in the season, but the team hopes some young pitchers will make important progress. Whether it’s Juan Burgos, Andrew Hoffmann, Drey Jameson, Brandyn Garcia, or others, each has a chance to stand out.
“We have many talented young players,” Hazen emphasized, “and obviously we need to improve this area through both external acquisitions and internal player development. From now until spring training, the bullpen roster will continue to be reinforced.”
