Why has former MVP Goldschmidt, with 372 career home runs, cooled off? US media analyzes his best potential new team

The 38-year-old slugger Paul Goldschmidt, who was with the New York Yankees last season, became a free agent in the offseason and has not yet secured a new club. The American media source The Athletic recently wrote a piece assessing his best possible next team.

Goldschmidt has 15 seasons in the majors, totaling 2,074 games played, with a career batting average of .288, 372 home runs, and 1,232 RBIs. He was named National League MVP in 2022. Last season, he joined the Yankees on a $12.5 million one-year deal but struggled, hitting only 10 home runs — his lowest in five years. After the season ended, he entered free agency again.

According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, Goldschmidt’s former team, the Arizona Diamondbacks, where he spent eight years, is the most ideal next destination. The Diamondbacks need a right-handed bat to complement their left-handed first baseman Pavin Smith, and Goldschmidt fits this role. Additionally, Nolan Arenado, a ten-time Gold Glove third baseman who was Goldschmidt’s longtime teammate in St. Louis, recently joined the Diamondbacks via trade, raising hopes for a reunion. Rosenthal believes that both tactically and emotionally, the Diamondbacks represent the best option for Goldschmidt’s return to the field.
