The New York Mets' entirely revamped infield lineup could set a rare record in the season opener.

The Mets’ winter overhaul of their infield roster might lead to a century-spanning milestone in the opening game.

The team first signed Jorge Polanco in the offseason, planning to have him at first base, then brought in Bo Bichette, anticipated to cover third base. Notably, both players have a combined total of only one major league game experience at their new positions.

Bichette has never played third base in either the major or minor leagues; aside from briefly covering second base during the 2025 World Series, all his appearances have been at shortstop. Polanco’s sole first base experience was on April 6, 2025, in an away game against the Giants in San Francisco, where he entered as a defensive substitute in the ninth inning but did not handle any plays before the game ended with a walk-off hit. Previously, Polanco primarily played second base, shortstop, and third base in the majors.

According to Elias Sports Bureau data, if the Mets start Bichette at third and Polanco at first in the opener, they will become only the second team in nearly a century to field two non-rookie infielders simultaneously in their new positions with no more than one major league game experience each at those spots. The last team to do so was the 1948 Brooklyn Dodgers, who moved Jackie Robinson from first to second base and Billy Cox from shortstop to third. History shows both players eventually became regulars at their new positions.

If this plan comes to fruition, both Bichette and Polanco will make their Mets debuts at their new positions in the first game. They are expected to be joined by offseason acquisition Marcus Semien at second base, while Francisco Lindor will continue at shortstop. This means three of the four starting infielders in the opener will be making their first appearances for the Mets.

This will mark the fourth time in franchise history that at least three starting infielders make their team debuts simultaneously in the season opener. The previous instances occurred in 1992 (Eddie Murray at first, Willie Randolph at second, Bill Pecota at third), 1963 (Tim Harkness at first, Larry Bearnarth at second, Al Moran at shortstop), and the inaugural 1962 season when all four infielders debuted.

Whether considering positional changes or roster makeup, the Mets’ infield will present a completely new look this season, with a unique chapter of baseball history waiting to be written by them together.
