The New York Yankees claimed top 100 prospect Luciano off waivers to strengthen their position player depth.

The New York Yankees acquired infielder/outfielder Marco Luciano off waivers today, adding a previously highly touted top 100 prospect to enhance their roster depth.

Renowned for his dynamic bat speed and right-handed power potential, Luciano was the premier prospect in the San Francisco Giants' farm system and consistently ranked among MLB Pipeline’s top 100 prospects from 2020 through 2024. However, during his time with the Giants in 2023-2024, his talent did not translate into major league success, posting a .217 batting average and a .590 OPS over 41 games.

At 24 years old, Luciano spent the entire 2025 season with the Giants’ Triple-A Sacramento River Cats, playing 125 games with a .214 batting average (99 hits in 462 at-bats), including 21 doubles and 23 home runs, and driving in 66 runs, primarily playing left field. Over his minor league career spanning 500 games, he has compiled a slash line of .246/.355/.445.

Luciano has moved between several teams during the offseason: he was claimed off waivers by the Pittsburgh Pirates on December 5 last year but was designated for assignment two weeks later; then on January 7, the Baltimore Orioles claimed his contract but released him last week.

This move fills the Yankees’ 40-man roster, but once Cody Bellinger’s five-year, $162.5 million contract is officially announced, the team will need to make further roster adjustments.
