A source revealed to MLB's Mark Feinsand that the Tigers made their biggest deal of the weekend on Sunday, striking a two-year contract deal with starting pitcher Jack Flaherty.
Fraherty's $35 million contract is the most expensive signing of the Tigers in the offseason, far surpassing the Detroit Tigers' $15 million contract with infielder Gleyber Torres and starting pitcher Alex Cobb. But the club still has its sights set on a bigger name free agent target.
Even after signing Fraherty, the Tigers were one of the teams chasing third baseman Alex Bregman, according to ESPN's Buster Olney. The Detroit Free Press's Evan Petzold also reported Monday that the Tigers are still fighting for Bregman.
According to Athleticist's Chandler Rome and Ken Rosenthal (subscription required), Bregman is favored by five teams. MLB network insider Jon Heyman recently mentioned that the Tigers, along with the Astros, Cubs and Red Sox, are competing for the two-time All-Star.
Bregman can meet the needs of the Tigers, who finished 22nd in the major leagues with a win contribution (fWAR) of 0.9 to third basemen last season, and are expected to remain below the league average this season. Joining Detroit also allows Bregman to work with A.J. Kimchi. Hinch), Kimchi coached him in Houston for four seasons. However, Detroit may need to make a six-year, $156 million offer from the Astros earlier in the offseason, which is still in effect.
