First robbing a home run then hitting a walk-off single, Merrill helps the Padres stage a huge comeback against the Mariners.

San Diego Padres center fielder Jackson Merrill emerged as a hero on both sides of the ball today. In the game against the Seattle Mariners, he first robbed Julio Rodríguez of a home run in the third inning, then later delivered a two-run walk-off single during the team's dramatic ninth-inning rally, helping the Padres reverse a 7-6 deficit and secure their seventh consecutive win.

In the bottom of the third inning, Mariners star Julio Rodríguez launched a deep fly ball to center field that appeared destined to leave the park for a home run. Stationed in center field, Merrill leaped vigorously and snatched the ball back from beyond the wall, robbing the two-run homer. However, Padres starter Randy Vásquez and reliever Ron Marinaccio struggled to contain the Mariners' offense, and by the end of the top of the ninth inning, the Padres still trailed 2-6.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Mariners sent closer Andrés Muñoz to seal the game. He first walked Manny Machado, then allowed a double to Gavin Sheets. A sacrifice fly by Fernando Tatis Jr. brought in one run, followed by consecutive singles from Luis Campusano and Ramón Laureano, narrowing the score to 5-6. Even after the Mariners switched to left-handed reliever Jose A. Ferrer, Merrill still drove a double to left field, sending two teammates home and completing the comeback with a walk-off hit, giving the Padres a 7-6 victory.

Merrill said after the game: "That's what a good team does—we don't give up until the final out is recorded." Regarding his defensive gem in the third inning, he stated: "That was the best defensive play of my career." Padres manager Craig Stammen praised him, saying: "Tonight, Merrill was our hero."
