Shohei Ohtani reached a new franchise milestone in today's game where the Los Angeles Dodgers lost 3-4 to the Colorado Rockies. He hit a single in the ninth inning with two outs, extending his personal consecutive on-base streak to 50 games. This number ties the record held by "Wee" Willie Keeler, ranking third longest in Dodgers franchise history (since 1900).
However, this remarkable streak was nearly ended. In the first inning against Rockies starter Ryan Feltner, Ohtani hit a ground ball behind first base. First baseman Troy Johnston fielded it and threw to Feltner covering the base, but the throw was high, glancing off the edge of Feltner's glove. Ohtani reached safely on the error.
Yet this play was ruled as a fielding error by the first baseman, so it is not counted as an on-base in the statistical criteria for Ohtani's consecutive on-base streak.
In the third inning, Ohtani grounded out to first base. In the fifth inning, he flew out to left field. When he stepped up to bat in the eighth inning, he hit a ground ball toward shortstop, but Rockies catcher Hunter Goodman was called for batter interference.
On the record sheet, this is marked as a catcher's error. Therefore, even though Ohtani reached first base for the second time that night, it still could not be counted toward his consecutive on-base streak.
For the entire Dodgers team, this was also a night where things did not go smoothly.
After Ohtani reached on an error in the first inning, Kyle Tucker immediately hit a two-run home run to right-center field, giving the Dodgers their first lead. Dalton Rushing added another run with a solo home run in the second inning, his fifth homer in six games this season.
Starting right-handed pitcher Emmet Sheehan pitched five innings, allowing four hits and two runs, with two walks and four strikeouts.
But all of this was not enough to secure a win on this night. The Rockies broke through against Dodgers reliever Will Klein in the sixth inning, with Troy Johnston hitting a two-run double to take the lead.
This loss marks the Dodgers' first defeat against a National League opponent this season, as they previously held a 11-0 record in games versus NL teams.
