Cam Schlittler had not allowed more than two runs in any start for over a month, a hot streak that put him in the early mix for the AL Cy Young Award.
That brilliant stretch encountered a setback today. Schlittler lasted 4.1 innings against the Cleveland Guardians at Yankee Stadium, surrendering a season-worst five runs (four earned), leading to a 9-4 defeat for the New York Yankees.
Paul Goldschmidt homered and drove in a season-high four runs for the Yankees, collecting hits in his first three at-bats. The Yankees have now lost nine of 12 games this season against teams with a .500 or better record.
Schlittler allowed five hits, struck out three, issued no walks, and threw 50 strikes among his 76 pitches.
Guardians' Brayan Rocchio delivered a sacrifice fly in the third inning, and Kyle Manzardo launched a two-run homer in the fourth to give Cleveland a 3-2 lead.
Goldschmidt answered with a two-run single in the fourth, briefly putting the Yankees back on top, but Travis Bazzana and José Ramírez drove in runs off Schlittler in the fifth.
One of the runs in the fifth was unearned, stemming from a fielding error by third baseman Amed Rosario on a ground ball off the bat of Patrick Bailey.
Over his previous eight starts, Schlittler posted a 5-1 record with a 1.07 ERA, including a win last Wednesday in Kansas City against the Royals, where he tossed six innings while allowing just one run.
