52-year-old Ichiro Suzuki will take part in the Seattle Mariners' Home Run Derby! Star-studded OB roster revealed

In celebration of the Mariners' 50th season, the team has made a surprise announcement: a "Legends OB Home Run Derby" featuring a gathering of retired stars will take place in August. The highlight that has fans most excited is the official entry of Ichiro Suzuki, the 52-year-old Hall of Fame icon who was voted in by a wide margin.

This unprecedented legends home run contest is scheduled to be held on August 8 (Beijing time) at T-Mobile Park, the Mariners' home stadium. Fans who purchase tickets for that day's regular-season game against the Tampa Bay Rays will be allowed to stay and watch. The Mariners have not only invited Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. to serve as the event's chairman, but also split the retired stars into two teams, led by Nelson Cruz and Jay Buhner respectively. Buhner excitedly noted that the city and its fans are truly special, and having players from multiple generations return to Seattle for the 50th anniversary marks a celebration on an entirely different scale.

Among the roster released by the Mariners, besides the focal figure Ichiro Suzuki, other participants include legendary slugger Mike Cameron, who smashed 278 career home runs and is considered a strong favorite to win; current bullpen coach Austin Nola; power hitter Ryon Healy; Bucky Jacobsen; former NPB Orix star Stefen Romero; and left-handed pitcher Ryan Rowland-Smith.

Although Ichiro Suzuki was primarily known for his high batting average during his 19-year MLB career—accumulating 3,089 hits but only 117 home runs—he has consistently shown the ability to hit for power. Whether during batting practice before games in his playing days or while coaching high school teams after retirement, he has effortlessly produced strings of long hits, repeatedly sending balls over the outfield wall. With his usual strict self-discipline and daily training regimen, the question of what kind of "home run show" Ichiro will put on at this celebration has become the most anticipated focus for fans.
