The Yomiuri Giants of Nippon Professional Baseball officially announced today that they have reached a contract agreement with left-handed pitcher Shinnosuke Ogasawara, who has been playing for the Harrisburg Senators, the Washington Nationals' Double-A affiliate in MLB. The 28-year-old southpaw has ended his brief MLB career of just over a year, returning to NPB after two years, and is expected to become a key reinforcement for the Giants' starting rotation as they currently sit atop the Central League standings.
Hailing from Kanagawa Prefecture, Ogasawara graduated from Tokai University Sagami High School, leading the team to a championship as their ace pitcher at the 2015 Summer Koshien tournament. The following year, he was selected as the first-round pick by the Chunichi Dragons in the draft and spent nine seasons in Nagoya.
During his time with the Chunichi Dragons, Ogasawara made 161 appearances, recording a record of 46 wins and 65 losses with a 3.62 ERA, gradually establishing himself as the team's primary left-handed starter. After the 2024 season, he challenged Major League Baseball through the posting system, signing a two-year contract with the Nationals worth a total of $3.5 million.
However, Ogasawara's MLB journey did not go smoothly. He made it to the majors last year, appearing in 23 games, including two starts, posting a record of 1 win, 1 loss, and 1 hold with a 6.98 ERA, before being removed from the 40-man roster at the end of the season. This year, he started at Double-A and was briefly promoted to Triple-A Rochester on April 15, but was sent back down to Double-A less than two weeks later. He never earned a call-up to the majors all season, making a return to Japan a viable option.
For the Giants, Ogasawara's arrival is a timely boost. Although the team currently holds the top spot in the Central League, their starting pitcher rotation has been an area needing reinforcement. Iori Yamazaki, the team's leader in wins last season with 11, is still affected by a right shoulder condition and has yet to pitch for the top team this year. Meanwhile, new foreign signings Spencer Howard and Bryan Mata have yet to secure a win, prompting the front office to make an early move.
At 28 years old, Ogasawara is still in his prime. Combining extensive experience as a starter in NPB with a year of exposure in MLB, he not only adds depth to the rotation for the championship-contending Giants but is also poised to become a key factor in shaping the season's outcome in the second half.
