Shohei Ohtani, the two-way star of the Los Angeles Dodgers, was originally expected to return to the MLB mound on August 31, but it was reported before the game that he was still not fully recovered and unable to pitch. Two days have passed, and the Dodgers are still unsure when he can resume his pitching training.
The Dodgers returned home today to face the St. Louis Cardinals. Before the game, media asked when Ohtani would resume pitching training, and Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said, "I'm not sure yet. I still think it's possible that he won't do anything until Sunday (before September 7 Beijing time). But we need to talk this week about what to do next; we haven't discussed it yet."
Ohtani, who has not pitched since July 4, last threw in a bullpen session on August 29, and was originally expected to start on the 31st. However, he only threw about 20 pitches, roughly 10 fewer than his usual bullpen session two days before a start. The next day, Roberts said Ohtani still felt soreness in his left knee and right biceps, so he was unable to pitch on the 31st.
While unable to pitch due to injury, Ohtani has continued to play as a hitter. However, his batting has been in a slump, with an OPS of just 0.699 over his last 21 games, and he has gone 10 consecutive games without a home run. In those 10 games, his slash line is only .125/.255/.200, with an OPS of just 0.455, and he has struck out 15 times in 47 plate appearances.
Regarding this, Roberts previously said, "We still need to get Shohei back on track. Hopefully, when we return home, we can get him into a better state, both physically and mentally. Once his hitting gets going, the game will be very exciting."
