Los Angeles Rams owner Stan Kroenke has reached an agreement to acquire the Los Angeles Angels.

Arte Moreno's time as the Los Angeles Angels' owner is drawing to a close. Stan Kroenke, owner of the Los Angeles Rams, has struck an agreement to buy the franchise, with the deal projected to close in early 2027, subject to MLB approval.

This ends Moreno's 23-year ownership tenure since he bought the team in 2003, though he will retain a small, undisclosed minority stake. Under his leadership, the Angels experienced early success, winning six division titles (2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2014), but have struggled over the past decade. They have not had a winning season since 2015 and currently hold a 53-85 record, tied for the worst in the American League.

"The Angels are a historic franchise deeply rooted in a major market," Kroenke said in a joint statement from the Angels and Kroenke Sports & Entertainment. "We look forward to an exciting future together with the Angels organization."

This season has been marked by significant changes for the Angels. Longtime team president John Carpino retired and was succeeded by Molly Jolly, while general manager Perry Minasian was fired in early June. The Angels hired former longtime Cardinals GM John Mozeliak as interim general manager, who helped oversee the draft, the trade deadline (where seven players were dealt), and recent front-office adjustments. Mozeliak's contract expires in December, and he has not yet decided whether to stay, but remains involved in the search for a new general manager.

Jolly and Mozeliak did not reveal when Moreno began seriously considering selling the team, and said the news came as a surprise to many. They have not yet communicated with Kroenke Sports & Entertainment, but both stated that operations are continuing as usual for now.

"This news caught me off guard," Mozeliak said. "When I first came here, Arte and I talked, and he mentioned this possibility, but finding out from Molly this morning was surprising, though not shocking. I think this is exciting news for everyone. Change is exactly what I came here to help drive."

Moreno's decision to sell caught many off guard, as he had indicated during spring training that he had no intention of selling. The 80-year-old had also considered selling in 2022 but ultimately decided to keep the team.

"The Angels organization is pleased to announce this transaction with Kroenke Sports & Entertainment," Moreno said in a press release. "The Moreno family has been honored to lead the Angels for the past 23 years, and we believe that with Kroenke Sports & Entertainment's experience and success, they are the best next owners for the team. The Angels organization looks forward to continuing its commitment to fans, employees, players, and business partners."

Kroenke owns the NFL's Rams and developed SoFi Stadium and the surrounding 300-acre Hollywood Park district in Inglewood. Kroenke Sports & Entertainment also owns the Denver Nuggets (NBA), Colorado Avalanche (NHL), Colorado Rapids (MLS), Colorado Mammoth (NLL), and Arsenal Football Club (English Premier League).

The Rams won Super Bowl LVI and are considered a championship contender this season; the Nuggets won the 2023 NBA Finals; the Avalanche have won the Stanley Cup in 2001 and 2022. The Rapids won the MLS Cup in 2010, and Arsenal just won the 2025-2026 Premier League title.

Angels superstar Mike Trout said he has a good relationship with Moreno, but is excited about Kroenke's track record of building championship teams.

"Kroenke has a great record of success and winning championships," Trout said. "I'm very excited and can't wait to meet him."

The Rams also have a historical connection to the Angels, having played at Angel Stadium from 1980 to 1994 before moving to St. Louis. Kroenke became a minority owner of the Rams in 1995 and played a key role in bringing the team back to the Los Angeles area through the privately financed Inglewood project in 2016.

Angel Stadium was renovated between 1996 and 1998, but in recent years under Moreno, efforts to renovate or develop the surrounding area have stalled, including a failed land deal in 2022. As Kroenke Sports & Entertainment is regarded as a top sports real estate developer, addressing the stadium issue will be a key task. The team's current lease runs through December 31, 2032, with two renewal options that could keep the Angels at Angel Stadium through 2038.

Jolly said it is too early to determine how things will unfold, but there is a positive atmosphere throughout the organization.

"This is an exciting day," Jolly said. "Arte loves the Angels, but with Kroenke Sports & Entertainment as the next owner—someone who has achieved success across multiple sports leagues—I think it's fantastic for the organization, the fans, the partners, and the players."
