The Chicago Cubs have relegated top rookie Matt Shaw to 3A

Matt Shaw is returning to the minor leagues.

The Chicago Cubs made roster changes ahead of Tuesday's trip to San Diego, relegating the team's No. 18 rookie to triple-A Iowa. As a corresponding transfer, infielder Vidal Bruján was activated from the 10-day injury list.

Shaw has been on the roster this season since the opening series against the Dodgers in Tokyo, making 18 appearances in the team's first 19 games, averaging a 0.172 batting average, 1 hit, 3 RBIs and 0.535 attack index. The 2023 Cubs first-round pick will play in Triple A with rookies ranked 2-6 on farm.

Right pitcher Eli Morgan is on the 15-day injury list due to elbow impingement. Morgan pitched with an injury this season and had a 7.1-inning, 12.27 defense rate. Right pitcher Nate Pearson was also sent to a triple-A (8.2 innings and 10.38 defense), while left pitcher Luke Little and right pitcher Daniel Palencia were recalled to the major leagues.
