MLB MLB President Rob Manfred recently told The Associated Press about the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, which will be severely impacted by the MLB regular season (April-October) due to the mid-July and the baseball program being held in mid-July.
"It's complicated for us, with a lot of major league players and countries involved, and the game time can be a huge disruption to our season. We're trying to figure out whether or not it should become the norm for major league players to participate in the Olympics. Of course, we see the 2028 Olympics as a marketing opportunity."
Baseball's seat at the Summer Olympics has been unstable, and the top major league tournament to promote professional baseball is the baseball classic, which is scheduled to stagger the regular season during spring training and encourages major league players to compete by blood. Manfred will then have to make a difficult decision about whether or not to release the player for the Olympics.
The last baseball event was held in July 2021 due to the pandemic, with only six teams from Dominica, Israel, Mexico, Japan, the United States, and South Korea. At that time, Shohei Ohtani was playing a regular season game in the major leagues (Angels) and was unable to return to China, and the American star also stayed in the major leagues to fight, and finally the Japanese team won the gold medal and the American team won the silver medal.
The next Olympics will be held in Los Angeles, and the American stars of the major leagues, Bryce Harper and Aaron Judge, can't sit still and openly shout that they want to participate. Los Angeles is Otani's second home, so he would naturally like to be a part of the tournament as well, and the opinions of these top stars will certainly be taken into account by Manfred.
