Boston Red Sox Injury to First Baseman Head Coach: Will continue to communicate with Devers

As if urging the Red Sox to add first baseman Romy Gonzalez, who replaced Triston Casas, to the 10-day injury list today, head coach Alex Cora said the team will continue to communicate with Rafael Devers.

After Casas was reimbursed for the entire season due to an injury, Casas alternated first baseman with Abraham Toro, during which time the Red Sox asked Devers about the possibility of moving first base, but was refused.

A few days ago, after Devers publicly stated in the media that he did not want to go to first base, the team's top management, including Red Sox owner John Henry, also went to Kansas City to meet with Devers face-to-face, hoping to internalize the matter instead of fermenting it outside.

Gonzalez's injury was caused by a quadriceps left thigh contusion, which dates back to May 9 and means he can return next week, while the Red Sox called second baseman Nick Sogard from the 3A minor league.

Sogard, 27, will be promoted to the major leagues in 2024 and has played 1 of 31 games as a first-base baseman, while he has only been a starting first baseman in 6 of 6 seasons in the minor leagues, but Deckers is still a starting DH in the first game of the major leagues today.

Asked if the team owner met in person the day before if it meant that Devers was about to start first base fielding practice, Cora responded, "We're going to continue to talk to him, we're going to continue to look for replacements, and we're going to do whatever we need to make things better, we've had Romy before, Toro and Sogi now, and that's how we're dealing with it now."

However, the Red Sox's first baseman so far this year ranks in the bottom of the major leagues in all offensive numbers, and Sogard, who has just been called, has only delivered 1 into 88 batting average, 0 hits, and 10 RBIs in 28 triple-A games this season, and it is predictable that the firepower of this position has not improved.

"He's got a great goalkeeping and we're going to have him paired with Toro, and today the Royals have left shots, so I think it's reasonable to let him start [left and right," Cora said, "and we'll have two of them as the first basemen for the coming week."
