Aaron Judge's recent form has been outrageous – even his own teammates are looking stupid.
Fresh off hitting the roof of the Royals Hall of Fame the day before (a court record of 469 feet), the Yankee heavy gunner hit his 25th shot of the season at Kaufman Stadium on Wednesday night. The laser cannon from the right field (Statcast ranged 413 feet) helped the Yankees beat the Royals 6-3, and he is now just one home run away from equalizing league leader Cal Raleigh.
The two-hit shot (fifth of the season) had a muzzle velocity of 108.8 mph and flew in the air for just 4.8 seconds before smashing into the stands. Judge now leads the major leagues across the board: .394 batting average, .490 on-base percentage, .779 batting average, 98 batting averages, and 1.269 attack index. Three straight hits and 54 straight away games — tying the fourth-longest record in Yankees history, with only Babe Ruth (62), Derek Kitt (60 and 54) and Lou Grieg (60) ahead of him.
"It's just out of control right now," starting pitcher Clarke Schmidt shook his head after six innings without dropping a point, "and he does damage every time he gets on the court." Just look at the batting percentage, and you can hit a home run even if you don't hit a home run. This stability is intimidating. It was the 16th time in Judge's 10-year career that he had scored three consecutive hits, the last time being a personal record of five in September.
Judge, who was also selected on Wednesday, became only the third player since 1901 to play multiple bases in 51 of the team's first 66 games, tied with Ruth (52 in 1924/1927; 51 in 1923) and Grieg (51 in 1936).
After watching the roof home run the night before, head coach Aaron Boone joked, "It's time to move him to a higher league." "But even if there is such a league, I am afraid that it will not be able to stop Judge's momentum now.
