Ketel Marte has been placed on the restricted list due to a burglary at his home during the All-Star break.

As the Diamondbacks start the second half of the season, aiming to be buyers rather than sellers at the Trade Deadline based on their strong home games against the Cardinals and Astros, they will lose their All-Star second baseman Ketel Marte—who has been placed on the restricted list today.

Marte's home in the Phoenix area was burglarized while he was away for the All-Star Game, and Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo suggested this is the reason Marte requested to "take a few days off."

“He requested some time away just to stabilize his emotions and get back to being a core part of the team,” Lovullo stated. “So this is a day-to-day observation. My contact with him is limited.”

After facing a severe injury crisis in the first half of the season, the Diamondbacks find themselves on the edge of the NL Wild Card race as they begin the second half. Although they trail by 5.5 games, they need to surpass four teams.

General manager Mike Hazen has not committed to a buying or selling strategy at the deadline, and the performance of the Diamondbacks over the next week will greatly influence his decision.

Marte was placed on the restricted list due to a shortage of infielders caused by his absence, necessitating a roster spot to be cleared. The team signed veteran free agent infielder Sergio Alcantara and added him to the roster.

Alcantara appeared in one game for the Giants this season and played 68 games for their Triple-A affiliate in Sacramento.

Players on the restricted list remain under contract with their major league teams but are no longer active with the team and are not required to receive pay.

In Wednesday's All-Star Game, Marte hit a double off Tarik Skubal that brought in two runs for the National League.

The 31-year-old Marte has a batting line of .290/.394/.567 with 19 home runs in 68 games this season. He missed about a month after suffering a hamstring injury on April 4.

Before the team's optional workout yesterday, Lovullo expressed hope that the person who burglarized Marte's home would eventually be caught.

“We all know what he’s going through,” Lovullo said regarding the burglary incident. “It’s unfortunate. I think he might retreat a bit when he’s feeling down, and I respect that space and give him that space.”

The timing of Marte's absence is clearly unfortunate, but Lovullo emphasized that human compassion must come first.

“He’s an outstanding baseball player who can impact the game in many ways when he’s in the lineup,” Lovullo said. “But I have great respect for his current situation. I certainly wish he were here, but since he’s not, we can only deal with the circumstances.”

Also today, the Diamondbacks recalled catcher Adrian Del Castillo from Triple-A Reno while placing catcher Gabriel Moreno on the 60-day injured list. Moreno suffered a minor fracture in his right hand from being hit by a pitch on June 7.

Right-handed pitcher Trevor Richards was selected from Reno, and infielder Tristin English was optioned to Triple-A.
