At 42, San Francisco Giants pitcher and legend Justin Verlander has found it difficult to achieve a win this year. Today, during the game against the Toronto Blue Jays, he only managed to pitch 2.2 innings, giving up 4 runs before being taken out. Consequently, the Giants lost 0-4 to the Blue Jays, and Verlander faced an eighth consecutive loss to begin the season.
In his 16th start of the season, Verlander pitched 2.2 innings, recording no strikeouts and issuing 3 walks while allowing a total of 9 hits. Although he managed to escape two scoring threats in the first and third innings with double plays, he was hit for 6 hits and surrendered 4 runs in the second inning.
This marks only the 9th time in Verlander's 20-year Major League career that he has exited a game after pitching less than 3 innings, and it is already the second time this year. His earned run average has dropped to 4.99, and he has become the 13th pitcher in Major League history to start 16 games in a season (excluding fake starts) without securing a win.
Regarding his performance, Verlander stated, "I remain optimistic about the effectiveness of my pitches, but today was quite challenging. Clearly, they found ways to hit many balls into the field, exploiting various gaps and hitting well into the corners. However, I remain hopeful; the adjustments I've made to my pitching mechanics have helped the effectiveness of my pitches, and overall, my velocity has increased, and my breaking balls have become sharper."
Giants manager Bob Melvin remarked that Verlander was unable to get opponents out after just two strikes today, but considering the number of baserunners, he still managed to minimize the damage. Today, the Giants' lineup recorded 11 hits, one more than the Blue Jays, but unlike the Blue Jays, they lacked timely hits to string together scoring opportunities, which became the key to the game's outcome.
