Following the sweep by the Houston Astros today, the Arizona Diamondbacks' record has fallen to 50 wins and 53 losses, leaving them 5.5 games behind the wildcard position. After several weeks of buyer-seller speculation, Arizona may be moving into a seller's role.
According to MLB.com reporter Mark Feinsand, the Diamondbacks are discussing trades involving third baseman Eugenio Suárez, first baseman Josh Naylor, and starting pitchers Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly. MLB Network insider Jon Heyman stated that the team is "close to accepting a seller's position" and will soon initiate formal trade negotiations.
All four players will become free agents at the end of this season. Suárez is the most sought after—his 36 home runs and .918 OPS have attracted interest from teams such as the Yankees, Cubs, Mariners, Astros, and Reds. Naylor has contributed 11 home runs and a .807 OPS in 93 games this season. Gallen has had a rough season (21 starts with a 5.58 ERA), while Kelly has maintained a steady performance (21 starts with a 3.32 ERA).
