Today, the Braves took action to enhance their rotation depth by trading for veteran right-hander Erick Fedde from the Cardinals.
After their loss to the Rangers today, the Braves announced that they would receive Fedde and cash considerations in exchange for a player to be named later or cash compensation. To make room on the 40-man roster, Atlanta transferred right-hander Grant Holmes (who has inflammation in his right elbow) to the 60-day injured list, just after Holmes had been placed on the injured list earlier that day.
All five of the Braves' starting pitchers have now been placed on the injured list: Holmes joins Chris Sale (fractured left rib), Reynaldo López (inflammation in right shoulder), Spencer Schwellenbach (fractured right elbow), and AJ Smith-Shawver (strained right elbow).
"We have to keep moving forward," said manager Brian Snitker after the game. "We'll find a way to piece together the rotation; the games won't stop because of injuries. We just have to keep adjusting the roster and take it game by game."
Fedde was designated for assignment by the Cardinals on Thursday after allowing six runs (seven hits) in three innings against the Rockies last Wednesday, contributing to the team's 4-8 loss. He has not won in his last 12 starts for the Cardinals, going 0-7 with an ERA of 6.38.
After the game, Fedde admitted to struggling: "The fact is I’ve been performing terribly, repeatedly putting the team in tough situations—giving up early runs forces the lineup to chase. My confidence has definitely hit rock bottom. I've gone through ups and downs in my baseball career, but I still maintain a professional attitude and give my all every day. The team deserves better performances, and I'm working hard to bounce back."
A change of scenery could provide a win-win opportunity for Fedde and the Braves; however, while bringing in Fedde, the Braves are expected to play the role of seller before the trade deadline. The two players most rumored to be dealt are Marcell Ozuna and Raisel Iglesias.
