As reported by MLB insider Jon Heyman, the Mets are engaging with various teams regarding trade inquiries for White Sox slugger Luis Robert Jr., with the intention of enhancing their existing center field combination of Tyrone Taylor and Jeff McNeil.
Bob Nightengale of USA Today revealed trade details on Sunday: the White Sox are requesting that the Mets include third baseman Mark Vientos in any deal involving Robert. The White Sox, holding a $20 million team option for Robert for the next two years, are not in a rush to trade him, with FanSided reporter Robert Murray confirming that the team views him as a controllable asset until 2027 (the Cuban will turn 28 on August 3).
Despite posting a batting line of .206/.293/.343 this season, Robert hit two home runs in the first 11 games of July, achieving an impressive OPS of .982. His career-high of 38 home runs in a season and elite center field defensive skills remain valuable assets. The Athletic's Will Sammon previously reported that the Mets are willing to trade infield depth for bullpen help, making a Vientos-for-Robert deal a possibility.
If seeking low-cost options, the Mets are also interested in Orioles' soon-to-be free agent Cedric Mullins. However, ESPN's Jesse Rogers notes that the 30-year-old's OPS has only been .595 over the past 68 games, and his defensive abilities have declined.
