To improve the center field position, which is currently handled by Tyrone Taylor and Jeff McNeil, MLB Network insider Jon Heyman reported last Saturday that the Mets are one of the teams asking the White Sox about Luis Robert Jr.
We now have a rough understanding of what the White Sox are looking to get in return for Robert. Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported on Sunday that the Chicago White Sox want the Mets to include third baseman Mark Vientos in any trade involving Robert.
Given that Robert has two team options worth $20 million remaining on his contract, the White Sox are willing to be patient during trade negotiations. Robert Murray of FanSided learned from sources that Chicago believes Robert will continue to play for two more years rather than taking a "let's get something while we can" approach with the Cuban player, who will turn 28 on August 3.
Robert's batting line this season is only .206/.293/.343, but in the first 11 games of July, he hit .351 with two home runs and an OPS of .982. He has also had a season with 38 home runs and remains an excellent defensive center fielder. Will Sammon of The Athletic previously reported that the Mets are willing to trade from their infield depth for a reliever, so a deal involving Vientos for Robert cannot be ruled out.
If the New York Mets are looking for a lower-cost center field option, Orioles' Cedric Mullins—a player who is about to become a free agent—might be preferred over Robert. According to ESPN's Jesse Rogers, the Mets are also monitoring Mullins in addition to Robert. That said, the 30-year-old's defense has declined, as he has an OPS of .595 over the past 68 games as of the end of today’s game.
