The Mets are acquiring two-time All-Star closer Helsley from the Cardinals.

According to MLB.com reporter Mark Feinsand, the Mets will trade for Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley as they continue to reshape their bullpen's backend. The teams have not officially confirmed the trade, but it is reported that St. Louis will receive three players in return: infielder Jesús Baez (ranked 8th on MLB Pipeline's Mets prospect list), right-handed pitcher Nate Dohm (14th), and unranked right-handed pitcher Frank Elissalt.

Earlier the same day, New York acquired low-slot pitcher Tyler Rogers from the Giants.

Helsley, who has both performance and an expiring contract, is seen as the most likely trade candidate for the Cardinals, even though he is the longest-tenured player on the team—drafted in 2015 out of Northeastern Oklahoma State University.

This two-time All-Star pitcher peaked last year, not only setting a franchise record with 49 saves but achieving this feat with just 53 save opportunities. He struggled in 2025 due to a toe injury and mechanical issues, but still secured 21 saves in 26 chances, striking out 41 batters over 36 innings, with a record of 3 wins and 1 loss and an earned run average of 3.00.

"You always crave to be part of October games, not knowing if it will be your last chance," Helsley stated today before the trade (having participated in the playoffs three times with the Cardinals), "We sometimes take the postseason for granted, and it means a lot when other teams are willing to bring you in."

Although his strikeout rate and whiff rate have declined from his peak season in 2024, Helsley's fastball average of 99.3 mph remains elite in the majors, and his slider has evolved into a decisive pitch. The slider's +10 "run value" ranks sixth among all relievers' single pitches.

The challenge in the trade lies in Helsley's desire for a top contract during the offseason, referencing the deals of All-Star closers Edwin Díaz (five years, $102 million) and Josh Hader (five years, $95 million). Before the 2025 season, he switched his agency from Ballengee Group to Wasserman, indicating he may seek at least a four-year, nine-figure contract.
