“The Sleeper” Grisham once again delivered a crucial hit to help the New York Yankees narrowly defeat the Astros.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone referred to Trent Grisham as “The Sleeper” because the center fielder seems unfazed by anything. Boone stated that Grisham always remains calm and confident whenever he steps onto the field.

This nickname is likely to stick, as Grisham hit a home run in the bottom of the eighth inning during the home game against the Houston Astros, helping the Yankees secure a 5-4 victory.

When asked if he liked the nickname, Grisham seemed indifferent.

“I think it's just something people want to hype up,” Grisham said.

At that moment, with the score tied at 4-4 and left-hander Bryan King on the mound, Grisham worked the count to 3-1 before hitting the ball into the upper deck of right-center field, giving New York a one-run lead. Grisham has now set a career-high with 21 home runs, 16 of which either tied the game (5) or put the Yankees ahead (11).

“I just believe I’m ready for this moment. I feel like I was born for this. I approach the game with that mindset,” Grisham said. “(Staying relaxed) is key.”

Boone noted that Grisham always finds a way to slow down the game in the batter's box.

“He can stay focused in those moments. He has done a great job all season with the quality of his at-bats,” Boone said. “Even when he faced some minor setbacks, he was patient and knew what he was looking for. He has a solid plan. You saw his power. That was a very crucial at-bat.”

In the end, David Bednar, who replaced Devin Williams to close the game, earned the win after securing five outs following a five-out save three days earlier. Boone hoped to limit the right-hander to just one inning, but right-handed pitcher Camilo Doval could not record any outs in the eighth.

With the Yankees leading 4-2, José Altuve hit a single to left field, allowing pinch-runner Cam Smith to score. After Carlos Correa walked to load the bases, Bednar came in but walked Christian Walker, allowing Jesús Sánchez to score, tying the game at 4-4. However, Bednar managed to escape the jam by striking out Yainer Diaz and Taylor Trammell.

“I can’t put Bednar in a more critical situation. He had a favorable count against Walker but ultimately walked him. But he didn’t back down, then (got the strikeout), and then he perfectly handled three batters in the ninth,” Boone said.

Right-hander Luis Gil pitched well enough in his second start of the season to earn a win. He threw 5.1 innings, allowing just 2 runs and striking out 7.

Initially, the right-hander’s performance seemed like it would be a long afternoon. The first batter he faced, Jeremy Peña, hit a home run on a 2-1 count, giving Houston an early lead.

But the Yankees took the lead against left-hander Framber Valdez in the bottom of the first. With the bases loaded and no outs, Paul Goldschmidt scored due to Giancarlo Stanton's walk. Then, Ben Rice hit a sacrifice fly to center fielder Chas McCormick, allowing Aaron Judge to score, giving the Yankees a one-run lead.

Although the Astros tied the game in the fourth inning, Gil looked like the pitcher who won the AL Rookie of the Year award last season.

Gil exited the game with the Yankees leading 4-2, but he did not earn the win due to Bednar's blown save.

“He found his rhythm on the mound. He had several counts reaching three balls, but for the most part, he won those matchups,” Boone said of Gil. “I think he was dominating in every aspect. His fastball, changeup, and slider were all important pitches for him today. It was great to see his performance; he put in a tremendous effort.”

Grisham has a feeling that the Yankees are close to becoming one of the hottest teams in the league. Why does he feel this way?

“I believe everyone in this room trusts their teammates. This is a very talented team,” Grisham said. “If we can get hot at the right time, then what we can do as players in this room is evident.”
