The Yankees are once again plagued by injuries, as they have put infielder/outfielder Amed Rosario on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to yesterday) due to a left shoulder AC joint sprain. The New York team has recalled catcher J.C. Escarra from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Rosario injured his shoulder in the tenth inning of the game where New York lost to the Astros 5-3 the night before last. With a runner on first and one out, Yainer Diaz hit the ball deep into right field. It appeared that Rosario could catch the ball, but he collided with the right field wall and fell to the ground. Meanwhile, center fielder Trent Grisham picked up the ball and tagged out the runner, Christian Walker, at second base.
Rosario lay on the ground for several minutes but eventually walked off the field on his own.
Rosario stated that he felt much better today. If his condition continues to improve, he hopes to be activated from the injured list as soon as the 10-day period is up.
“I remember everything about that at-bat. I started running fast to catch the ball. I miscalculated the distance and then crashed into the wall,” Rosario said through translator Marlon Abreu.
Rosario was acquired in a trade with the Nationals on July 26. The 29-year-old has a batting line of .270/.310/.426 in 47 games with the Washington Nationals; in 4 games with the Yankees, he has 3 hits in 7 at-bats and 1 RBI.
This will be Escarra's second call-up to the majors. He has a batting line of .205/.299/.337 in 39 games with the New York Yankees; subsequently, in 8 games with the RailRiders, he has 10 hits in 26 at-bats with 5 RBIs. The 30-year-old Escarra will be the third catcher, following Austin Wells and Ben Rice.
