Deng Kaiwei was overwhelmed by the Padres, who topped the National League West, while the Dodgers fell to the second wild card spot.

San Francisco Giants pitcher Deng Kaiwei recently achieved his first Major League victory and successfully secured a spot on the 26-man roster. However, today, in his start against the Padres, he only pitched 1.2 innings, allowing 7 runs, setting a record for the most runs given up in a single game in his Major League career.

Last week, Deng Kaiwei excelled in relief, throwing 5 scoreless innings to earn his first Major League win and successfully remained on the 26-man roster. To accommodate right-handed pitcher Luke’s return from the 15-day injured list, the Giants opted to send left-handed pitcher Whisenhunt down to Triple-A on the 13th, allowing Deng to start against the Padres early on the 14th.

In the top of the first inning, Deng faced the Padres' leadoff hitter Fernando Tatis Jr., issuing a walk. He then induced a double play from Luis Arraez and forced Manny Machado to ground out, completing an unconventional "three up, three down." In the bottom of the first, the Giants managed their first hit of the game after two outs, but ultimately left runners stranded.

In the top of the second inning, Deng recorded the first out with just one pitch, but then issued two walks and allowed a hit, creating a bases-loaded situation. His teammates had a chance to escape with a double play, but luck was not on their side when a pop-up from Jake Cronenworth hit the second base bag and bounced away for a hit, costing Deng 2 runs. The nightmare continued as Deng issued his third walk of the inning and then gave up another hit to Tatis, allowing 2 more runs. Facing Arraez, who had previously hit into a double play, Deng surrendered a sacrifice fly, leading to another run. Machado added the Padres' fourth hit of the inning, bringing in the sixth run and ending Deng’s outing.

Today, Deng pitched 1.2 innings, throwing 53 pitches, with 32 strikes. He did not record a strikeout, issued 4 walks, and all 4 hits he allowed came in the second inning. After he left the game, the catcher also had a passed ball, resulting in the seventh run, with 6 of those runs charged to Deng, causing his ERA to soar to 9.90.

In early July, the Padres were still trailing the Dodgers by as many as 9 games, but significant trades before the mid-season deadline paid off, and the team has been on a hot streak. In contrast, the Dodgers are suffering from a three-game losing streak, marking the first time since April 28 that they have relinquished the top spot in the National League West.
