Today at Nationals Park, Philadelphia Phillies reliever Jhoan Duran was hit on his right foot/ankle by a 94.1 mph line drive from Paul DeJong in the ninth inning, which left him unable to apply pressure, leading to him being carried off the field on a stretcher.
The seriousness of his injury remains uncertain, however, the X-ray results for Duran were negative. The team stated that he will undergo further evaluation tomorrow.
“He was sprinting to field the ball, but once he got to it, I think the adrenaline wore off and the pain kicked in,” said Phillies manager Rob Thomson. “Before the stretcher arrived, he actually said, ‘I feel much better, I think I can walk back to the dugout,’ but we have a lot of steps here, so we just wanted to get him off on a stretcher so he wouldn’t have to walk up those steps.”
Duran was replaced by David Robertson, who retired all batters after allowing a double, securing a 6-2 victory for the Phillies.
“You can only pray for the best outcome,” said Kyle Schwarber. “It’s unfortunate, but that’s baseball; it can happen to anyone. You just hold your breath and wait for the results. Hopefully, everything is fine, and it’s not something too serious.”
Duran was acquired from the Twins at the trade deadline and has made an impressive start with the Phillies, not allowing any runs in four innings (five appearances) and successfully converting all four save opportunities. This season, he has a 1.86 ERA, striking out 56 batters over 53.1 innings pitched.
“I hope he’s okay; he can’t put too much weight on his foot,” Bryce Harper said. “That spot getting hit is painful, so hopefully he’ll be alright. It’s a 20-step walk from the field to the clubhouse, so it makes sense to take him out on a stretcher.”
