Despite losing a 4-run lead in the first inning today, the Los Angeles Dodgers managed to win 5-4 against the San Diego Padres at home, aided by Mookie Betts' spring homer in the eighth inning, achieving a three-game sweep in the fight for first place in the National League West.
Betts has had a poor batting performance this season and has been in a deep slump lately. His 13th homer of the season in the eighth inning was only his second home run since July 7, during which he played 32 games with a batting line of .222/.287/.310.
However, in the bottom of the first inning, Betts walked right after Ohtani’s hit, and subsequent home runs by Freddie Freeman and Andy Pages allowed the Dodgers to take a 4-0 lead. Although the Padres scored 4 runs to tie the game in the eighth, Betts quickly responded with a spring homer to secure the victory for the Dodgers.
The Padres' lineup recorded 10 hits throughout the game, 4 more than the Dodgers. Luis Arraez had a standout performance with 3 hits, while Ramon Laureano and Freddy Fermin each contributed 2 hits. However, they only managed 2 hits in 14 opportunities with runners in scoring position, and their key hitters Manny Machado, Jackson Merrill, and Xander Bogaerts combined for 0 hits in 10 at-bats, striking out 6 times. Despite scoring 1 run in the 3rd, 5th, 6th, and 8th innings to tie the game, they ultimately faced a sweep.
The Padres' starting pitcher Yu Darvish, who celebrated his 39th birthday yesterday, exited after just 4 innings, recording 5 strikeouts and 2 walks, allowing 3 hits, including 2 home runs, and giving up 4 runs. Shohei Ohtani got a hit in his first at-bat against Darvish, finishing the day with 1 hit in 4 at-bats. After being swept in this three-game series, the Padres went from leading the division to trailing the Dodgers by 2 games.
