Another coach from the Spurs lineage? 43-year-old Parker aims to coach in the NBA: currently pursuing a national coaching diploma

Tony Parker is a legendary player for the French national basketball team and one of the iconic figures of the San Antonio Spurs. He was once a shareholder of the ASVEL club and later served as its chairman. What’s next for 43-year-old Tony Parker? On August 22nd Beijing time, Parker revealed in an interview with L'Équipe that he aspires to become an NBA team coach.

As Parker told L'Équipe, his latest dream is “to coach in the NBA,” marking a new chapter in his professional journey. According to the French newspaper, the former Spurs point guard began the process of obtaining a national coaching diploma in 2025.

It is reported that this morning at the Tony Parker Academy, the U15 training session was led by the 43-year-old legend himself, instead of their usual coach Bastien Jacquelard. However, his long-term ambition is to coach in the NBA, following in the footsteps of other European head coaches in the league, such as Jordi Fernández, Thomas Isola, or Darko Rajaković.

In 2009, Parker became one of the shareholders of the ASVEL club; in 2014, he took on the role of chairman. After playing one season with the Charlotte Hornets, Parker ended his illustrious playing career in 2019 by announcing his retirement. He won four NBA championships with the San Antonio Spurs, was Finals MVP in the 2006-07 season, selected six times for the All-Star game, made the All-NBA team four times, and appeared in 1,254 games over an 18-season NBA career, averaging 15.5 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 5.6 assists per game.

The NBA already has several coaches from the Spurs system, and Parker is poised to become the next Spurs-affiliated head coach.
