Rocket legend Sampson: I could easily average 30+ points and 20 rebounds per game in today's league. Some call me the original Vembanyama.

At 2.24 meters tall, Rockets legend Ralph Sampson was the top pick in 1983, with a style that clearly went beyond his time. Because of his distinctive height and abilities, he is frequently compared to Spurs star Vembanyama. On August 27 Beijing time, he gave an interview at a charity event.

Although he played in the league 30 years ago, Sampson remains confident that he could still dominate on today’s NBA courts.

When Vembanyama emerged as a top rookie, many compared his game to Sampson’s: both are slender big men with outside shooting range and the ability to handle the ball. Of course, Vembanyama entered the league with superior shooting range and ball-handling skills.

“Yeah, everyone says I was ahead of my time,” Ralph Sampson said with a smile, “but you have to know, I could definitely play in this era and maybe even be more dominant than when I was in the league.”

Though injuries shortened his career, during his first three seasons with the Houston Rockets, this center was still a force to be reckoned with. In 243 games, he averaged 20.7 points, 10.9 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1 steal, and 2 blocks per game.

Even in today’s game, Sampson believes he could easily control the match. “Averaging 30 points and 20 rebounds per game,” Sampson said, “that’s a piece of cake.”

“Some say I’m the ‘first generation Vembanyama’ and he’s the ‘second generation.’ But the truth is, I’m the original Ralph, and he’s the next Ralph. I could post up, dribble, and shoot from outside. Back in my day, we didn’t shoot many threes, but I’m sure if I played now, my competitive mindset would be tough enough to reach elite league standards.”

Sampson also spoke about the Rockets’ offseason acquisition of Durant. “Kevin Durant can fit in with anyone,” Sampson said. “I really admire KD; he can teach young players how to be pros. I think it’s a perfect fit and should extend his career. The team should give him a bigger salary and longer contract because I believe he doesn’t need to exert himself as hard as before but can play smarter and save energy for the playoffs.”

Durant just completed his 17th NBA season, averaging 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 1.2 blocks per game this season, with a shooting percentage of 52.7% and a three-point percentage of 43%.
