On October 18th Beijing time, ESPN reporter Wemby Horst reported that Reeves is very likely to renew his deal with the Lakers. The newest odds show that if he leaves, the Rockets are the leading candidate as his next team.
“I think their current situation is quite interesting — aside from Doncic, no one on this team has an absolutely secure position,” Horst said on a podcast. “Hachimura and Vanderbilt have contracts, but the Lakers can trade them anytime they want. They’re not core players. I’m very confident Reeves will likely re-sign with the team, but both sides are still in a kind of ‘pending’ state.”
Reeves’ salary for the 2025-26 season is slightly above $13.9 million, and he holds a player option worth $14.8 million for the 2026-27 season. ESPN’s Bontemps noted that the 27-year-old guard is currently eligible for a four-year extension worth $89 million; however, if he waits and declines his player option in 2026 to become a free agent, he could earn over $40 million annually then.
Although Reeves might forgo the current extension opportunity to pursue a higher salary on the free agent market, the possibility of him returning to the Lakers after free agency begins remains high.
It’s understandable that the Lakers want to keep Reeves — since joining as an undrafted rookie in 2021, he has developed into a key offensive player for the team. In the 2024-25 season, Reeves delivered his career-best performance, averaging 20.2 points and 5.8 assists per game, with a shooting percentage of 46.0% and a three-point rate of 37.7%. His play after the All-Star break was especially impressive, averaging 22.2 points with shooting, three-point, and free throw percentages of 48.3%, 40.6%, and 90.1%, respectively.
Considering LeBron James’ uncertain future with the Lakers after next season, Reeves is expected to become a long-term core player, with a career timeline that aligns with Doncic’s, potentially becoming his enduring teammate.
But what if Reeves and the Lakers fail to reach an agreement and he ends up leaving the team? The latest odds show the Rockets (+250) as his top favorite next team, followed by the Jazz, Pistons, Mavericks, Bucks, Celtics, and others.
Previously, Lakers insider Buha also mentioned Reeves’ potential next teams, specifically citing the Spurs and Rockets. He added that the Rockets have a slightly higher chance of acquiring Reeves.
“For these two Texas teams, directly signing Reeves might be difficult, so a sign-and-trade could be possible. About 10 teams in the league have salary cap space (such as the Bulls, Nets, etc.), and some of those teams have shown interest in Reeves before. However, the Spurs already have Fox and Harper, so they don’t really need to add another guard. Compared to that, the Rockets seem more likely.”
