According to ESPN reporter Shams, following the team’s defeat to the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday, head coach Taylor Jenkins raised concerns about Morant’s "leadership and commitment during the game." Insiders disclosed that Morant’s reply to Jenkins was considered to be in an "improper tone."

ESPN reporter Max noted that this suspension will cost Morant 1/145 of his 2025-26 season salary ($39,446,090), which amounts to $272,042.

In a brief post-game interview after the Lakers match, when asked about his poor performance, Morant repeatedly answered, “Go ask the coaching staff.” The 26-year-old guard played 31 minutes, scoring only 8 points and grabbing 1 rebound, both season lows; he shot 3 of 14 from the field and attempted only 2 free throws, also a season low.

Morant’s one-game suspension will be served in tomorrow’s game against the Toronto Raptors.

According to the Memphis Commercial Appeal reporter, Morant “clearly showed a detached state” during the second half of the game against the Lakers. Notably, after hitting a game-winning floater against the Phoenix Suns, he did not attempt a single shot in the last five minutes of this game.

The report mentioned that although Coach Jenkins is praised by players for his straightforward coaching style, some of his substitution decisions have sparked criticism.
