What can be gained by trading Davis? The return might be close to what Durant brought, but Mavericks likely won't get multiple first-round picks

On November 22nd, Beijing time, according to ESPN’s Tim Bontemps, other league teams have indicated that the Dallas Mavericks plan to investigate the possibility of trading Anthony Davis before the February trade deadline. The potential return for this trade is expected to be similar to the assets exchanged when Durant was sent to the Rocketsrather than the generous compensation the Jazz obtained in 2022 when they traded Gobert and Mitchell.

At that time, the Rockets acquired Durant in a record-setting seven-team deal by sending Jalen Green, Dillon, the No. 10 pick, and five second-round picks.

A Western Conference scout noted that teams generally have limited draft assets, which restricts the Mavericks’ options for returns. Most teams lack the resources to offer multiple first-round picks, so Dallas will likely only receive about two solid players plus a draft pick in any deal.

After this season, Davis has $121.2 million remaining on his contract, with salaries of $58.4 million and $62.7 million over the next two seasons. He will qualify for an extension in the upcoming offseason. The 32-year-old center could sign a three-year extension worth up to $218.5 million as early as August 6, 2026.

Several league insiders say it’s difficult to compile a long list of potential suitors for Davis. His massive salary poses a major hurdle for teams near the luxury tax threshold, and the Mavericks themselves are close to the second luxury tax line, likely wanting to avoid adding more long-term max contracts.

Davis is currently in the first year of a three-year, $175 million extension signed with the Lakers in August 2023. While his performance remains elite when healthy, concerns about his long-term value persist due to injury history. He holds a player option worth $62.8 million for the 2027-28 season.

The Mavericks face tough decisions regarding roster construction and salary cap flexibility. Trading Davis would provide significant financial relief and could address long-term team-building concerns. Reports have named the Pistons and Bulls among potential destinations for Davis.

Reporter Jake Weinbach also proposed a trade scenario where the Bulls acquire Davis and Brandon Williams; the Mavericks receive Dosunmu, Hurt, Zach Collins, the Bulls' 2026 first-round pick, and the Trail Blazers' 2026 first-round pick (lottery protected).
