The Warriors are pursuing both James and Anthony Davis, aiming to form a super big three of James, Davis, and Curry.

As the local time for the June 30 free agency market opening approaches, James remains completely unfazed and is not rushing to decide his next move. However, the general consensus is that he will keep playing, possibly through his 24th or 25th season, which would mark a full quarter-century.

Today, he did physical therapy at home, using pneumatic compression recovery pants to accelerate blood circulation, relieve lactic acid buildup, and reduce joint and muscle soft tissue strain.

The old man also played golf, shaking his head and bobbing it for the camera—clearly showing much more white in his beard.

Speaking of head-shaking, that brings to mind the one from Golden State Warriors.

Yahoo Sports reporter Kevin O'Connor wrote today, citing multiple league sources, that the Warriors are attempting to acquire Anthony Davis via trade and then sign James in free agency!

The trade package for Davis must include Jimmy Butler, who is on a $57.7 million expiring contract and is still recovering from a torn ACL. The Warriors must also include draft assets—they have two future first-round picks and four first-round pick swaps available in any trade.

Sources say the Warriors hope that bringing in Davis will help attract James from Los Angeles to the Bay Area. The pitch is simple: reunite with AD, team up with Curry and Green, play for Steve Kerr, and make one more championship run with a legendary lineup.

ESPN's Shams reported last week that the Lakers have not yet offered James an extension. So if James wants to keep playing, he might need to accept a mid-level exception worth just over $15 million on a new team. But James' agent, Rich Paul, has said that 10–12 teams have inquired about acquiring James this summer, so a sign-and-trade is also possible.

The Warriors are certainly appealing. James won gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics with Curry, Davis, and Kerr, so the basketball fit is obvious. James has said his partnership with Curry feels effortless because they "play the game the right way."

But people do question whether they can actually pull it off.

After signing Trae Young to a four-year, $212 million extension, the Wizards have expressed interest in keeping Davis. Wizards general manager Will Dawkins said last week: "He wants to be here, and we want him here. We'll have those conversations when we're allowed to talk in mid-August."

Davis will be eligible to sign a four-year, $275 million max extension on August 6. If Davis is traded, his extension timeline resets. Under the collective bargaining agreement, he would not be eligible to sign that full max contract until six months after the new trade becomes official.

The Wizards' moves indicate they are a team wanting to win now. Would a 37-year-old Butler, just returning from injury, really be that appealing to the Wizards? Or would the Warriors need to send Butler to a third team and bring another All-Star to Washington?

Then there's Butler's side. After participating in the Warriors' team activities this week, Butler said he wants to stay with the Warriors and called them the best team he's ever played for—but he was also asked about the possibility of being traded.

Butler said: "If I get traded, I get traded. The team's job is to win. Can I help them do that? Yes. If they think someone else can help them faster than I can after coming back, then they have to do it. But as of now, I'm here."

That statement says it all, reflecting the Warriors' situation. Butler was their big acquisition, but now he might be the piece that needs to be moved. They can't wait for Butler to recover to contend—it has to start before the new season begins, which is why the Warriors are exploring landing James and Davis.

The Warriors have missed on star pursuits before. In recent years, they tried to trade for Paul George, Lauri Markkanen, Pascal Siakam, Kevin Durant, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Kawhi Leonard. Only after Durant showed no interest in a reunion did they pivot to Butler. Now Butler is injured, and their championship window is even narrower.

Perhaps landing both James and Davis will be another fantasy for the Warriors. Or perhaps James, Davis, Curry, Green, and Kerr will turn their final chapters into one last championship push before the curtain falls.

No one can say for sure, but emotionally, I still kind of hope James doesn't go to the Warriors.
