$130 million over 4 years! Lakers acquire a superstar center! The heartbreaking reason behind LeBron's departure

With LeBron James deciding to leave the Lakers, the purple and gold will now fully become Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves' team. How far they can lead the squad will be a major storyline of the new season. Since 2010, no team has made the playoffs the year after LeBron's departure.

After James left the Lakers, former teammates Doncic, Svi Mykhailiuk, Jarred Vanderbilt, and Jaxson Hayes all posted photos with best wishes. Lakers legends Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar also updated their social media to bid farewell to James, thanking him for his contributions to the team.

The Lakers made a major trade today, acquiring Walker Kessler from the Utah Jazz by sending unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, as well as first-round pick swap rights in 2028 and 2030. Kessler will sign a four-year, $130 million contract with the Lakers.

The day after James left, the Lakers finally got the dream center that LeBron and Anthony Davis had been wanting since 2023. The Lakers now have no tradable first-round picks for the next seven years and will pay a combined $475 million to Doncic, Reaves, and Kessler. Congrats to the Lakers, I guess.

Let's get back to LeBron. As a free agent, no one knows where he will land. Ironically, James has been recruited by major professional leagues outside the NBA, including soccer, hockey, football, baseball, and racing.

Out of respect for the Lakers and gratitude for the past eight years of partnership, James chose to inform the Lakers of his departure decision before free agency began, allowing the team to calmly plan roster moves. A classy move from James—he has done his part for the Lakers.

Yahoo Sports expert Damien Jones spoke up for James, tweeting: "The Lakers never deserved LeBron James. Remember in the summer of 2018, when James, the best player in the world, chose to sign with the Lakers—a laughingstock team that had missed the playoffs for five straight seasons?"

"And how did the Lakers welcome the best player in the world? By pairing him with raw rookies like Lonzo Ball, Kyle Kuzma, and Brandon Ingram as teammates. James helped bring in Anthony Davis—the same Anthony Davis who ultimately helped the team acquire Doncic. James won the In-Season Tournament for the Lakers and brought them a championship—their first in a decade."

"Over these eight seasons, we've seen Lakers fans blame everything on LeBron when the team struggled, even though he was still performing at an All-NBA level. His loyalty was questioned, even though he fulfilled every contract until its end."

"We've seen the front office sit on draft assets and prioritize future cap space instead of going all-in every year. We've seen them waste LeBron and AD's prime years. Now, we see those same Lakers fans cheering and celebrating as James leaves, after he brought the team back to contention. He never got the appreciation he deserved."

Rich Paul explained the reasons for James' departure from the Lakers on his podcast, saying: "LeBron thought everything through and then told me, 'Listen, bro, I see the situation clearly and I understand it. I know that if I stay with the Lakers, I would probably make more money, but at this stage of my life, it might not be the best decision. I'd rather let go.' I asked him if he was 100% sure, and he said, 'Yeah, 100% sure. That's no longer a place I want to go back to.'"

There were earlier rumors that James would meet with the Lakers face-to-face, but Rich Paul said that after James informed him of his decision, there was no need for a detailed discussion with the Lakers. The Lakers clearly wanted James to return, but he had made up his mind and no longer wished to stay. He also chose to inform the team before free agency began, which was good for the Lakers.

Shams said on the TV program thatJames and the Lakers disagreed on the issue of winning championships. James still craves competing for titles, while the Lakers are building for the future.

In short, James wanted to maintain championship contention and strengthen the roster, but the Lakers' front office work in recent years simply didn't meet his standards. Since winning the title in 2020, the Lakers seemed to believe they had accomplished their decade-long mission, recklessly dismantled the championship core, and the team has been in decline ever since.

But James came alone in 2018 to rescue a struggling Lakers squad. One of the greatest players of all time was on your roster, and this is how you treated him? Heartbreaking. Over these eight years, James spent the tail end of his prime and only won one championship. I really feel for him.

James' next destination will undoubtedly be more competitive than the Lakers. He will play the joyful basketball he wants, without the frustration he felt in Los Angeles.
