The forward who once won the NBA Finals MVP award will no longer wear the Celtics jersey from the 2026-27 season onward.
Trade market NBA continues to heat up as the Boston Celtics decide to part ways with star Jaylen Brown. According to ESPN, the 2024 NBA champions have reached an agreement to trade Brown to archrival Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for Paul George and multiple draft picks in the NBA Draft.
Under the deal, Philadelphia will send Paul George, two first-round picks in 2028 and 2031, along with two second-round picks in 2028 and 2030 to Boston. The 2031 first-round pick is completely unprotected, while the other picks come with terms favorable to the Celtics.
This is regarded as one of the most surprising trades of this summer. Just a few weeks earlier, Boston had attempted to use Jaylen Brown and two first-round picks to acquire Giannis Antetokounmpo, but the Milwaukee Bucks ultimately opted to trade the Greek star to the Miami Heat. After that failure, the Celtics continued to seek new partners and decided to put "JB" back on the trade market once again.
Also according to ESPN, 'Brown' never requested to leave Boston. However, the Celtics front office wanted to restructure the roster after failing to achieve their goal of defending the championship.
Jaylen Brown closes a memorable 10-year tenure with the Celtics as one of the franchise's icons. The 30-year-old player has five NBA All-Star selections, won the 2024 NBA Finals MVP, and played a major role in helping Boston capture its 18th championship in history.
The past season was also Brown's most successful year, as he averaged 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game. He finished sixth in MVP voting.
Joining Philadelphia, Brown will team up with Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and young talent VJ Edgecombe to pursue championship contention. Interestingly, Brown and Embiid have had several clashes in the past. After last season's playoff series, the Celtics star publicly commented that the Cameroonian center was "one of the greatest centers in history, but also a frequent flopper".
Meanwhile, the Celtics added Paul George – a veteran with multiple NBA All-Star appearances – while also accumulating more future assets through draft picks. On the same day the Brown trade was finalized, the "Shamrocks" also reached agreements to acquire Mitchell Robinson and Mike Conley, showing that the team is entering a period of major restructuring to build its roster for the upcoming seasons.
