On July 5, per prominent journalist Shams, insiders disclosed that Patrick Ewing, a Georgetown and Knicks icon, will take on the role of assistant coach under Wizards head coach Keef. Having previously held the position of basketball ambassador for the Knicks, Ewing will now rejoin the Wizards' bench.

Over his 17-season playing career (from 1985-86 to 2001-02), Ewing earned 11 All-Star selections and 7 All-NBA Team honors. He spent 15 seasons with the Knicks, leading them to the Eastern Conference Finals twice.
Ewing has been involved in coaching for more than two decades. His coaching journey began with the Wizards, where he served as an assistant coach for the 2002-03 season. He later held assistant coaching roles with the Houston Rockets (2003-2007), Orlando Magic (2007-2012), and Charlotte Bobcats/Hornets (2013-2017).
After leaving his NBA assistant coaching position, Ewing returned to his alma mater, Georgetown University, where he served as the head coach of the Hoyas men's basketball team from 2017 to 2023.
The highlight of his coaching career came in 2021 when he led the team to a Big East Tournament championship. In 2023, the university parted ways with Ewing; his seven-year head coaching record stood at 75 wins and 109 losses.
In October 2024, Ewing rejoined the Knicks as the team's basketball ambassador. The Knicks reached the Eastern Conference Finals in 2025 and won their second franchise championship last season, ending a 53-year title drought.
Now, Ewing is set to return to the NBA sidelines as an assistant coach. The Wizards finished last season with a 14-68 record, but the team has significant room for improvement. With Trae Young, Anthony Davis, and this year's No. 1 overall pick AJ Dybantsa on the roster, their performance in the 2026-27 season is expected to rebound sharply. Ewing is anticipated to help Davis further elevate his game.
