Shams: Five Teams Have a Chance to Sign LeBron James, with Competition Centered on the Cavaliers, Heat, and 76ers

According to a July 15 report from Beijing time, insider Shams stated that a total of five teams are in the running to land free agent LeBron James. The contenders for James include the Golden State Warriors, Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Philadelphia 76ers, and Minnesota Timberwolves.

Shams noted, "Currently, these five teams are still on the shortlist, but the competition is mainly focused on the Cavaliers, Heat, and Philadelphia 76ers."He first broke the news on July 1: James informed the Lakers that he would be leaving the team in free agency.

Lakers beat reporter McMenamin reported last week that multiple team executives have been sending voice messages to James through his agent, Rich Paul, to recruit him. Observers believe James has not set a timeline for making a decision. Additionally, according to Windhorst, James has also proactively contacted players from teams interested in signing him to discuss the possibility.

Shams revealed today that James could decide on his destination at any moment, "perhaps within any given day or any given week." James has repeatedly emphasized that if this turns out to be the final season of his NBA career, he wants to compete for a championship. Therefore, each team's recruitment pitch will largely focus on their championship prospects for the upcoming season.

The Heat made a blockbuster move this offseason by acquiring Giannis Antetokounmpo to pair with Bam Adebayo. The Warriors are expected to re-sign Draymond Green, who was actively recruiting James during his time in Puerto Rico, urging him to join forces with Stephen Curry.

The 76ers brought in former Celtics star Jaylen Brown, bolstering a rotation led by Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey. The Cavaliers will retain Donovan Mitchell, James Harden, and Evan Mobley. The Timberwolves traded away Julius Randle and are rebuilding their lineup around Anthony Edwards and Rudy Gobert.

All five of the reported candidate teams, while pursuing James, are also considering trading for his son, Lakers guard Bronny James.

Front Office Sports reporter Alex Schiffer reported that multiple team executives have indicated they have discussed a plan: signing LeBron and simultaneously acquiring Bronny via trade. Bronny holds a guaranteed contract worth $2.3 million for next season.
