Lakers admit they are entering a dormant period, not aiming for a championship in the next two to three years: their goal is 50+ wins and reaching the second round of the playoffs.

On July 16, Lakers reporter Jovan Buha stated on his podcast that insiders admitted the team is now in a strategic hibernation. According to Buha, several insiders he spoke to indicated the same. Realistically, the Lakers do not anticipate being a championship contender over the next two to three years.

"Many within the Lakers organization admit that the team's strength may have slightly declined this season. Looking at the roster on paper, we no longer possess the top-tier talent we once had. We lost LeBron James, and other good players like Marcus Smart, Rui Hachimura, and Luke Kennard have also left. We understand why many fans are disappointed with this offseason's moves and why they feel the team has regressed. However, the current plan is focused on long-term strategy: building a new core around Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves. These players are in their prime development years (mid-20s) and can grow together. This core will form the foundation for the next three to five years. From this perspective, the approach is actually very reasonable."

Buha also said that if the sole focus is on winning a championship this season and building the strongest possible roster for the present, the Lakers are clearly not pursuing that path.

"The Lakers' internal assessment is that the team still has a chance to achieve 50+ wins this season, with the ability to compete for home-court advantage and at least reach the second round of the playoffs. On that basis, they will evaluate roster improvements through trades next offseason, continuously adjusting role players. If they can successfully meet this season's goals and gain full experience in team chemistry, they can then grow into a true championship contender, reaching the level of teams like the Thunder and Spurs, or at least be in the conversation for that tier."
