Unsung hero behind the championship! Ant Edwards reveals he gave Towns a cheat code to handle Wembanyama.

On July 18, Beijing time, Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards appeared at the New York Fanatics Sports Carnival today and disclosed that before every Finals game, he would advise his former teammate, current Knicks star Karl-Anthony Towns, on how to play against Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs.

ESPN reporter Karan Hooks released the interview video of Edwards talking about Towns. Towns led the Knicks to a 4-1 Finals victory over the Spurs to win the championship, and after winning, he specifically called Edwards on a video call.

"I was super excited. When Towns called me after the game, it was around three in the morning. I talked to him before every game, because the opponent was the Spurs. I shared a lot of tips with him, like the Spurs' usual offensive routes and defensive strategies against Wembanyama. Basically, I gave him a cheat code, and he successfully cleared the level and won the championship. I have to give props to KAT."

The Timberwolves, with Edwards, faced the Spurs in the second round of the playoffs this season, and the Spurs eliminated the Timberwolves 4-2. They also met three times in the regular season, making a total of nine matchups between the two teams this season.

In contrast, the Knicks only played the Spurs five times this season (two regular-season games plus the In-Season Tournament final), so Edwards indeed had more experience against the Spurs.

From the 2020-21 season to the 2023-24 season, Edwards and Towns played together for the Timberwolves. After that season, the Timberwolves traded Towns to the Knicks.

However, the two have always had a good personal relationship. After the Knicks won the championship, Towns specifically mentioned and thanked Edwards in an ESPN interview.

After the game, Towns said: "I want to sincerely thank all the teammates I played with before coming to the Knicks, especially my good brother Anthony Edwards, we have always stayed in close contact. These people made me who I am today, helping me grow into a better leader and a better player, shaping the person I am now. I will always be grateful."

Victor Wembanyama had an extremely impressive performance in Games 2 and 3 of the Finals, averaging 30.5 points per game with a 56.4% shooting percentage. However, in Games 1, 4, and 5, his shooting percentage was only 33.8%, and his three-point percentage dropped to just 21.7%.

Throughout the series, Towns took on the crucial task of defending Wembanyama, and his defensive performance was widely recognized. This outstanding display might have been helped by the defensive techniques Edwards taught him, contributing to the Knicks' historic championship victory.
