The Coach Association's Coach of the Year award is voted for by the league's 30 head coaches. The 57-year-old Atkinson led the Cavaliers to a 64-18 record this season and qualified for the playoffs as the first in the East. Last season, the Cavaliers finished fourth in the East with a 48-34 record, while Atkinson led the team to 16 more wins and helped the team have the best regular season record in the East. The Cavaliers swept the Heat 4-0 in the first round of the playoffs and are currently trailing the Pacers 1-0 in the second round.
